Background
Sexual harassment and misogyny within City firms remain unaddressed due to a pervasive "fear factor" preventing women from speaking out and a lack of trust in human resource departments, a peer has warned MPs.
During the launch of the Treasury committee's inquiry into sexism in the City, Helena Morrissey, chair of the Diversity Project, emphasised the need for an independent review of how firms handle complaints of sexual harassment and misogyny.
The parliamentary committee revisited its inquiry following a series of sexual harassment allegations in the business world, aiming to assess any progress made since its last investigation in 2018.
Lady Morrissey highlighted the fear among women in the sector, noting that reporting instances of harassment often worsened their working conditions. Despite firms investigating complaints, they tended to protect more senior individuals, leading to disillusionment among women and a reluctance to report incidents.
Morrissey also expressed sympathy for HR departments, acknowledging the challenges they face in addressing such complaints while emphasising the need for them to be perceived as supportive of employees rather than just representing the interests of the firm.
